Waste and recycling during the festive period

There are some changes to waste and recycling services during Christmas and New Year 2024/25.

You can sign up for the latest updates on waste and recycling services through the myAberdeenshire app.

We know that the festive period can lead to excess waste and that is why it is important to keep in mind how to reduce, reuse, and recycle. That includes making good use of your green caddy for all food waste. Remember, peelings and bones can go into food waste too. 

Bin collections

We are collecting some bins on different days due to Christmas and New Year public holiday.

If your collection day is:

  • Wednesday 25 December - we will collect your bin on the earlier date of Saturday 21 December
  • Thursday 26 December - we will collect your bin on Saturday 28 December
  • Wednesday 1 January - we will collect your bin on Saturday 4 January
  • Thursday 2 January - no changes

Missed collections

Our waste collection teams are focused on providing the service but, inevitably, people will be inconvenienced in winter as temperatures drop and collections might be missed. 

Bins missed between 23 December and 6 January

For the festive period only (Monday 23 December to Monday 6 January):

  • If your bin is not emptied on its scheduled collection day, please bring it back in
  • If a black lid bin is presented and missed, we will collect up to two extra black bags of excess waste on its next scheduled collection day
  • If a recycling bin is presented, missed, and not tagged, we will collect extra recycling of the same type on its next scheduled collection day

Recycling centres

For households only, if you find yourself accumulating additional recycling and waste items, our household recycling centres are available. 

Closures and changes to opening times:

  • 24 December closed from 3pm - last entry for all booked vehicles at 2.30pm
  • 25 December closed all day
  • 26 December closed all day
  • 31 December closed from 3pm - last entry for all booked vehicles at 2.30pm
  • 1 January closed all day

View usual opening times for recycling centres. There might be additional closures at some centres so please check before visiting. 

Bulky uplifts

Booking slots for bulky uplifts are closed from the week commencing 16 December and start again from the week commencing 6 January.
